The stepped metal pieces woven into the shingles alongside the chimney - bent, loose, or rusted, they let water track down the side

Stains on Only One Side
Water marks that appear on the wall or ceiling next to the chimney - but only on one side - usually mean the flashing failed on that face of the roofline.
